The Lequin family have been vignerons in Santenay since 1673, with François at the helm since 1996. He was first trained in Avize, Champagne, and then worked under David Ramey at Chalk Hill in Sonoma, California. During his studies, he decided he wanted to convert his family estate to organic farming. All of the vineyards have been organically farmed since 2009, and were Ecocert certified in 2012. Biodynamic ideas were introduced in 2010 and François continues his exploration of producing terroir-driven wines, precision and purity remaining his guiding principles. This ‘Vieilles Vignes’ release brings together old-vine harvests from three southwest-facing plots in Santenay: “Champs Claude” (70+ year-old vines), “Les Hates” (50-55-year-old vines), and “Clos Genet” (40-45-year-old vines). Fermented with indigenous yeasts, it ferments and ages for 12 months in barrels, of which 20% are new, plus three additional months in stainless steel. Concentrated red fruit flavors are accompanied by a hint of licorice, with a beautifully persistent finish. Biodynamically grown, certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
