Kis Tamás makes small-production, low-intervention wines on the unique volcanic soils of Somló, a tiny wine appellation located north of Lake Balaton in Northern Hungary. Somló sits on the slopes of an extinct volcano, and the black basalt soils impart a distinct and unmistakeable minerality to the wines of the area, with flinty, smoky notes in abundance. The rather obscure hárslevelű grape has been grown in Somló for generations, and is sometimes compared to chenin blanc-meets-riesling in character. The expressive stone fruit qualities combined with the remarkable minerality of the terroir are in ways evocative of classic Mosel riesling. This 100% hárslevelű comes from old vines on Kis’ organically-farmed 8 hectare estate, destemmed and pressed quickly, then spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. It was aged on the lees for 10 months, also in stainless, then bottled without fining or filtration, with very low sulfur added at bottling. Honeyed, dried apricot flavors mingle beautifully with herbal notes and a remarkably saline, savory backbone. A long finish offers plenty of mouthwatering acidity and a whiff of yet more smoky minerals. A powerful, terroir-driven cuvée. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
