Stolpman Vineyards helped put Ballard Canyon on the map, as it were, with their signature roussannes and syrahs. Since the winery’s founding in the 1990s, Pete and Jessica Stolpman and their team have branched out with other grape varieties and styles, but the roussanne still stands out for its unique voluptuousness. Hot days, cool nights, and limestone soils allow the late-ripening variety its chance to develop fully and retain acidity. What is more, the Stolpmans prioritize organic farming, hand harvesting, and minimal additions of sulphur, while allowing their vineyard crew (nicknamed “La Cuadrilla”) opportunities for profit-sharing. This 2017 vintage took advantage of a healthy amount of rain over the winter, and the heatwaves typical of late summer came early enough not to interfere with the vines’ final ripening. The winery crew brought the percentage of new oak down to one quarter—to stay out of the way of the wine’s delicate nose—and decided to blend in 12% of chardonnay to give structure to the finish. The Stolpmans call this a “red wine drinker’s white”: richly textured, with tropical fruit and citrus flavors, this is a full-bodied white that would complement a pork roast but might almost be happy serving as a meal in itself. Organically grown, vegan.
