Tapatio Blanco Tequila is distilled at La Altena Distillery, built by Don Felipe Camarena in 1937 in the mountainous region of Jalisco, Mexico. (“Tapatio” refers to a man from Guadalajara, Mexico.) The distillery remains in the Camarena family, with Master Distiller Carlos Camarena, Don Felipe’s grandson, at the helm today. Tapatio has been popular in Mexico for over 75 years, but wasn’t available in the US until 2002, where it quickly accumulated awards and accolades. It is made from 100% Arandas estate grown agave, which is slow roasted for four days, crushed with a traditional stone Tahona, fermented with 80 year old wild yeast, then double distilled in a small copper pot still. It rests for two months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. An incredible value, this vibrant blanco offers up classic herbaceous agave notes, aromas of anise, pepper, and earthy pear, and a smooth, complex mouthfeel with a hint of smokiness.
