Free Wine Tasting - Saturday

Today the focus is on new Italian arrivals, with two white wines and a rosé that are versatile choices for warmer weather dishes. We begin with a pinot bianco from the Alto Adige (Sudtirol) region of northern Italy, where the influence of neighboring Austria and Switzerland lend elegance and structure to the wines from this mountainous area. The second white features the ribona (maceratino) grape, an increasingly rare, distinctly tasty varietal native to the Marche region. Finally, an elegant rosé evokes the essence of Tuscan wildflowers to bring spring in Italy here to the Hudson Valley!
St. Michael-Eppan Weissburgunder Alto Adige DOC 2013
Country: ITALY / Region: TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE / Appellation: ALTO ADIGE DOC / Varietal(s): WEISSBURGUNDER aka PINOT BIANCO --- Named by Gambero Rosso and Slow Food wine guides as the best Italian winery in 2000, St. Michael-Eppan is one of the finest co-operatives in Alto Adige, Italy. Founded in 1907, and located in the village of Appiano, the co-operative works with more than 355 growers, all of whom share a commitment to ecological balance and vineyard sustainability. Most of the grapes are harvested from vineyards situated between 1,000 and 1,600 feet in the southern Tyrol in the villages of Appiano, Caldaro and Mazzon. This is a medium-bodied wine, with flavors of orchard fruits, including apple and peach, hints of honey and minerality all tied together by tangy acidity on the finish. Try this with asparagus quiche, broccoli and chickpea rigatoni, or grilled fish or chicken and enjoy a taste of the southern Tyrol mountains!

Cantina Sant' Isidoro Colli Maceratesi Ribona DOC "Pausula" 2013 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: ITALY / Region: MARCHE / Appellation: COLLI MACERATESI RIBONA DOC / Varietal(s): RIBONA --- The sub-region Colli Maceratesi of the Marche area in central Italy actually derives its name from the grape featured here, the ribona, or maceratino grape. Increasingly rare, this late-yielding grape is native to the area between the Apennine mountains and central Italy’s Adriatic coast, and produces a delightful round-bodied white wine with a supple blend of citrus and stone fruits. Appealingly dry, with just a hint of honeyed character, it works all by itself as an aperitif, or as a great companion to Pecorino cheese, porchetta, mushroom dishes, and even Indian food.
