WINES FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: SUMMER KICK-OFF!
We're featuring four wines this week to provide plenty of variety for the holiday weekend! A bit of globe hopping brings us a bright herbaceous verdejo from Spain followed by a California rosé that's as juicy and refreshing as a slice of watermelon on a hot day. Then just in time for the official start of BBQ season, we finish off with a biodynamic shiraz from Australia and a serious value Bordeaux.
Blanco Nieva Rueda DO "Pie Franco" Verdejo 2014
Country: SPAIN / Region: CASTILLA Y LEON / Appellation: RUEDA DO / Varietal(s): VERDEJO --- Verdejo is one of the more interesting Spanish white grapes. Along with albariño and godello, verdejo is capable of making some of Spain’s most compelling whites. It is most widely planted in the Ruedo DO, where it is sometimes blended with other white grapes. The variety produces wines of an aromatic character with an herbaceous, floral edge that is compelling. The wines are typically weightier than expected while maintaining crisp acidity and even developing a fine nutty character with age. This is a special bottling of verdejo: Pie franco (on its own feet) refers to the ungrafted rootstocks of these 100+ year old verdejo vines. The age of the vines results in a rich, more intense expression of the grape. A must-try, with any multitude of seafood dishes, including paella, grilled octopus with white beans, clams and mussels Casino.

Fresh and dynamic, this full-bodied wine offers lush currant and juicy blackberry flavors front and center with touches of chocolate, licorice, and a whisper of vanillin oak throughout. Clos des Trois Croix Lalande de Pomerol AOC 2010
Country: FRANCE / Region: BORDEAUX / Appellation: LALANDE DE POMEROL AOC / Varietal(s): MERLOT --- Lalande de Pomerol is the Bordeaux appellation that covers red wines produced just to the north of the more prestigious Pomerol region, in the Libournais area east of Bordeaux. Its proximity to its prestigious neighboring AOC is garnering well-deserved attention for this lesser-known region. Based in merlot, Lalande de Pomerol wines have a unique dark ruby-garnet color, with tannins that remain velvety, not hard. 100% merlot, Clos des Trois Croix has a delicate bouquet, slightly smoky and floral with touches of peat and black prune. Vibrant and edgy on the palate, chalky minerality lends structure to a core of ripe red fruit: cassis, bitter cherry, plums. A lengthy, mineral-laced finish provides a pleasant austerity and balance. Give this a try with a number of dishes, from cheese plates to grilled mushrooms, chicken, pork chops, or the summer staple: BBQ!
