Free Wine Tasting - Saturday

We're featuring four wines this week to celebrate Second Saturday! Two French rosés range from crisp and refreshing to subtly earthy and spicy, perfect to cover all your picnic needs. A bright, refreshing red from one of our favorite California producers, Broc Cellars, highlights the lesser-known counoise grape in a versatile and food-friendly way. We finish off with a rustic yet elegant Tuscan red made from heirloom grape varietals that's perfect for celebrations (it was created during one!), whether a party, picnic, wedding, or just celebrating the return of green grass and warmer weather!

Domaine Sylvain Bailly Sancerre AOC Rosé "La Louée" 2014
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: SANCERRE AOC / Varietal(s): PINOT NOIR --- The Bailly family has been producing wine in Sancerre since 1700, the domaine passed down from generation to generation even through the devastating phylloxera assault, through war and invasion. Certainly, there is a sense of history when working on an estate of this age. In 2007, Marie Hélène & Jacques were joined by their daughter Sonia in tending the vines on this historic domaine, ensuring the continuation of another generation’s work. The estate is gaining attention from a number of critics including those at the San Francisco Chronicle and Wine & Spirits Magazine. This rosé is elegant and flavorful. Hints of cherry and berry, with crisp acidity is so refreshing you'll be thankful for a bottle when the temperatures rise again.

Clos Cibonne Cuvée Tradition Rosé Côtes de Provence AOC 2012
Country: FRANCE / Region: PROVENCE / Appellation: COTES DE PROVENCE AOC / Varietal(s): TIBOUREN+GRENACHE --- Described by one taster as “love in a bottle”, this elegant rosé is the embodiment of springtime romance. Owned by the Roux family since 1797, the property of Clos Cibonne saw its winery modernized in 1930 by André Roux, who hoped to showcase his estate’s rosés. André replaced all of the estate’s mourvèdre with the native grape varietal tibouren, which he believed to be the ideal grape for the region. Bridget Roux (André’s granddaughter) took it over in the 1990’s, bringing Clos Cibonne back to its standing as one of the 18 Cru Classés in Côtes de Provence. Nowadays, Clos Cibonne is highly esteemed for producing distinctive rosé wines with earthy notes that capture the essence of Provence. From 30+ year old vines of 90% tibouren and 10% grenache, this rosé displays aromas of orange peel and notes of spice. On the palate, it is fresh with vibrant fruit flavors and a touch of salinity – perfect for pairing with red mullet, tomato bouillabaisse, grilled chicken, or dishes with saffron or curry.

Broc Cellars Counoise Eagle Point Ranch Mendocino 2013 - SUSTAINABLY GROWN
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: MENDOCINO / Varietal(s): COUNOISE --- Chris Brockway makes fantastic natural wines in his Berkeley-based urban winery by utilizing low-intervention winemaking methods and sourcing sustainably and organically-farmed fruit from lesser-known vineyards all over California. In the winemaking process, he uses low-tech equipment and very little to no sulfur until bottling. This wine features organically-farmed counoise, a lesser-known grape appearing in Rhône Valley blends, particularly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here in California it gets to shine on its own, with aromas of cranberry, spices, and earth, which give way to pomegranate, bramble, and a touch of pepper on the palate. Structured but medium in body, with bright, refreshing acidity, this matches beautifully with burgers, grilled beets, hard cheeses, or even roasted game.

Spettacolare Toscana IGT 2011
Country: ITALY / Region: TUSCANY / Appellation: TOSCANA IGT / Varietal(s): COLORINO+CANAIOLO+SANGIOVESE --- Spettacolare has its roots in family celebrations and experimentations! On the day of the Tuscan wedding of Matteo Cantoni and his bride Gaia, on their agri-tourism estate “Fattoria Fibbiano”, the groom’s brother Nicola, and César Baeza (an owner and former winemaker of NY’s own Brotherhood Winery), randomly blended different barrels of wine and discovered that they had created a new style of Tuscan wine. Made from the heirloom grape varieties of colorino, canaiolo and sangiovese brunellone from 100 year old vines in Terricciola, Tuscany, Spettacolare is full-bodied, but silkier and darker in color, with a softer finish than most other Tuscan wines. Plum color with purple edges, Spettacolare displays tomato paste, pepper, heather, and flinty aromas that turn to dry, earthy, tart berry fruit on the palate. Balanced, slightly spicy, and a bit toasty, it is at once sophisticated yet appealingly rustic. Try this with chicken with fire-roasted tomatoes and goat cheese, grilled pizza, or stuffed roasted peppers.
