Free Wine Tasting - Saturday

Start off 2016 with some compelling, unusual wine selections! We're pouring two sparkling wines of surprising origin: England! With over 25 years of experience, Ridgeview produces sparkling wines that have beaten champagnes in international competition and put England on the map as serious wine-making territory. Then we're uncorking a luscious skin-fermented white from Slovenia. While made from sivi pinot (better known as pinot gris), this is a far cry from the crisp whites we usually associate with that grape, instead evoking a "bread and butter" character of peach cobbler and custard, with a velvety finish and beguiling light strawberry color. A wonderful winter white! Finally, we welcome a new Argentinian malbec, full of pure fruit expression and depth, perfect for drinking with heartier cold-weather fare. Happy New Year!
Ridgeview Sparkling Wine "Bloomsbury" Brut 2012
Country: ENGLAND / Region: SUSSEX / Appellation: SUSSEX / Varietal(s): CHARDONNAY+PINOT NOIR+PINOT MEUNIER --- Founded over 25 years ago, Ridgeview was one of the pioneers of the still emerging English sparkling wine industry. Having realized a consistency in soil composition and climate with that of Champagne, Mike and Chris Roberts planted classic sparkling wine grapes. Over time, the winery has won numerous awards and has even beaten many Champagnes at competitions. This wine's focus is chardonnay, making it lighter and more delicate with citrus zest and apple aromas. There is a hint of red fruit from the two pinots in the blend. This is perfect to begin a celebration or to have with oysters or other shellfish.

Ridgeview Sparkling Wine "Cavendish" Brut 2012
Country: ENGLAND / Region: SUSSEX / Appellation: SUSSEX / Varietal(s): PINOT NOIR+ CHARDONNAY+PINOT MEUNIER --- In contrast to the "Bloomsbury."  is Ridgeview's "Cavendish" cuvée. With a greater focus on the red grapes in the blend lends it more distinct berry notes that mingle deliciously with yeasty brioche on the nose and delicate minerality. The red fruit make this wine a bit more structurally dominant, allowing this to even pair with roasted poultry and even lighter red meat dishes. Take one of each home to experience the range of flavors and the differences grape varieties express themselves.

Kabaj Sivi Pinot Goriška Brda 2012 - ORGANICALLY GROWN/SKIN FERMENTED
Country: SLOVENIA / Region: GORISKA BRDA / Appellation: GORISKA BRDA / Varietal(s): SIVI PINOT AKA PINOT GRIS --- On the northeastern Italian border, at the foothills of the Alps and 15 miles from the Adriatic sits the Goriška Brda region of Slovenia (‘Collio’ in Italian). Unfortunately, when Slovenia became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the late 1940’s, wine production suffered from the state-run “quantity over quality” approach. Upon gaining independence in 1991, private production resumed, indigenous grapes were replanted, and focus on terroir has intensified. In the late 1980’s, Katja Kabaj married former French Legionnaire and Bordeaux-trained enologist Jean Michel Morel, and they settled in Katja’s family village of Šlovrenc. Sivi pinot is the Slovenian name for pinot gris, and this wine represents the opposite end of the spectrum from the crisp Italian pinot grigios we’re more familiar with, displaying a creamy texture and strawberry color thanks to skin contact during fermentation. Grapes were hand harvested from the vineyards of Belo, Cujevca, and Jez, de-stemmed, and fermented for 2 weeks on the skins in 2400 liter oak vats with wild yeast. Bottled unfiltered, after 12 months on the lees, it spent a minimum of two years in cellar. The result is stunning, with complex mineral aromatics mingling with hints of dried stone fruits, custard, and piecrust, turning smoothly to peach cobbler and crème brûlée on the palate. A “bread and butter” wine, its incredible velvety density and length make it an ideal winter white, well suited for drinking at cellar temperature with mollusks, hearty vegetable dishes, and strong cheeses.

Cicchitti Malbec Mendoza 2010 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: ARGENTINA / Region: MENDOZA / Appellation: MENDOZA/ Varietal(s): MALBEC --- Bodega Cicchitti was founded in 1982 in Guymallen, Mendoza, by Jose (Pepe) Cicchitti. A family bodega with vineyards located in Lujan de Cuyo and the Valle de Uco, Cicchitti only uses organic handpicked grapes from its 240 acre estate, with yields kept low. Fermentation is done in small concrete tanks with native yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation in French and American oak casks. Aged for 8 months in French oak, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered, and held at the winery for another year before release. This 100% estate grown malbec is a delight for those who love the intensity and purity of Argentine fruit without overbearing wood tannins. Elegantly styled, it offers inviting aromas of spiced berries, cassis, cherry cola, black fruits and a hint of earth. On the palate it reveals fresh acidity, zesty red fruit, and more baked plum and earthy berry flavors enhanced by good depth and a medium-length finish. Pour this with mushroom and wild rice gratin.
