Celler Masroig "Pinyeres" Montsant DO 2014
Country: SPAIN / Region: CATALUNYA / Appellation: MONTSANT DO / Varietal(s): GRENACHE BLANC --- When drinking white wine in the winter, we're always looking for a bit more than our summer whites offer. More texture, more fruit, more intensity of flavor, any of these will suffice. Celler el Masroig has been making some very well made wines over the years and Pinyeres is no exception. Pinyeres blanc is a selection from old grenache blanc vines grown in the Montsant area, traditionally fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, then aged for three months on lees. Bright golden in color, with intense aromas of ripe white peaches, it displays hints of yeast and toast in the background. Bursting onto the palate with refreshing acidity, it then becomes creamy and bold with a delectably lingering finish. Drink this with fragrant roast chicken, hearty winter squash salads, pasta with cream and morel mushrooms, or with cheese while catching up on Netflix.
Fram Shiraz Swartland WO 2014
Country: SOUTH AFRICA / Region: SWARTLAND / Appellation: SWARTLAND WO / Varietal(s): SHIRAZ --- Thinus Krüger:CEO, president, winemaker, grape crusher, and sole employee of Fram, takes as his calling producing "wines of exploration." This shiraz is sourced from several old vineyards in Swartland, South Africa, blending barrels from the granite sands in Paardeberg with those from the iron-rich “koffieklip” or “coffee stone” soils west of Malmesbury. Dense, juicy, and concentrated, it has a defined bouquet of black fruit tinged with cool mint and fennel tones. Powerful dark fruit, rich spice, meaty character, and ferrous overtones on the palate deftly walk the line between definition and expansiveness. It precisely balances power and complexity with vibrant acidity and grippy tannin that make it more French in style (Cornas, perhaps) than one might first expect from a South African shiraz. Elegant and focused, this is a great match for braised spareribs- and an exceptional value too!
