Country: ITALY / Region: MARCHE / Appellation: VERDICCHIO DI MATELICA DOC / Varietal(s): VERDICCHIO --- Verdicchio is a grape that can be viewed as a symbol for the Marche, situated on the eastern coast of central Italy.  It is believed to be native to the area, and was mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century. Of the two verdicchio-producing appellations in the Marche, Jesi and Matelica, we prefer the latter, which produces firmer, more aromatic wines. The Accattoli winery, nestled in the hills bordering Umbria, makes this fabulous wine: straw green in the glass, featuring bright, lemony fruit with a creamy mouthfeel, and finishing with a refreshing crisp acidity that makes this perfect for anything from pork to chicken, shellfish to richer fish dishes.

Taking advantage of 50 year old vines and low yields, the wines are made using natural methods: sustainable farming, hand harvesting, and natural yeast all come together to produce a complex, classical-styled wine with a distinct sense of place. Named after its winemaker, Georges, this wine is fermented and matured in concrete tanks, hand bottled and unfiltered. Enticing aromatics of ripe elderberries and cherries, Provençal herbs, Ceylon tea and briny minerals transform on the palate to juicy intense notes of black berries, fig and sweet spices. The rich fruit is balanced by lively acidity and smooth tannins, with more minerals and nutty/vegetal touches of Swiss chard on a clean, pure finish.
