Pierre Frick Pinot Gris Alsace AOC 2010 - CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC

It's sensory." - Pierre Frick / Once an aspiring ecologist, Pierre Frick instead found his calling in the vineyards, farming organically since 1970, and biodynamically since 1981. Located in Alsace between Colmar and Guebwiller, Frick farms 12ha of vineyards (1/3 of which are rented), and remains passionately committed to improving and maintaining the health of his vines and land. By choosing to hand harvest with local grape pickers, Frick maintains the social and cultural component of the harvest, while allowing the true expression of the grapes and soil to come through in the cellar. He vinifies with natural yeasts only, and hasn't chaptalized (the addition of sugar to grape juice before or during fermentation to increase alcohol levels) since the 80's. Wines remain on fine lees for 5-9 months, in oak casks up to a century old, without any additional stirring. Expressive aromatics of quince, pear, and honeyed wildflowers carry through to a full-bodied, velvety palate, redolent with rich pear and light brioche flavors. Good acidity and a generous, lingering finish make this a wonderful match with roasts, hard cheeses, even chicken curry, as well as a fabulous aperitif.

Just in time for the holidays, this offering from Pascal Lafond satisfies on every level – including value! This 65-hectare, family-run estate is named after a famous French race horse of the 1960s, Rocquépine, a favorite of Pascal's father. Located in the rosé-only appellation of Tavel, it is now helmed by Pascal, with his son Jean-Baptiste assisting in the production of what are widely considered among the best wines of the region. Youthful and exuberant, this offers up bright, crunchy red fruits (berries, currants, and a hint of red plum), with touches of dried herbs, and vibrant acidity that makes it a great match for warming holiday fare. Structured, but not overwhelming tannins on the finish provide a wonderful counterpoint to dishes like roast lamb with garlic sauce and rosemary potatoes.
