Ridgeview Bloomsbury Brut 2014
Country: ENGLAND / Region: SUSSEX / Appellation: N/A / Varietal(s): CHARDONNAY+PINOT NOIR+PINOT MEUNIER --- Sparkling wine from... England?!?! Founded over 25 years ago, Ridgeview was one of the pioneers of the still emerging English sparkling wine industry. Having realized a consistency in soil composition and climate with that of Champagne, Mike and Chris Roberts planted classic sparkling wine grapes. Over time, the winery has won numerous awards and has even beaten many Champagnes at competitions. This wine's focus is chardonnay, making it lighter and more delicate with citrus zest and apple aromas. Green apple and greengage plum dance across the palate along with white peach, lemon, and white blossom. There is a hint of red fruit from the two pinots in the blend as well. This is a perfect choice to begin a celebration or to have with oysters or other shellfish.
Tyler Chardonnay Santa Barbara County 2015
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: SANTA BARBARA COUNTY / Varietal(s): CHARDONNAY --- .Justin Willett started Tyler in 2005, while he was still assistant winemaker for pinot noir and chardonnay specialist at Arcadian. Tyler is located in Lompoc, California, just west of the Santa Rita Hills, where Justin produces only chardonnay and pinot noir. (Some of you might be familiar with Justin's partnership with sommelier and restauranteur Eric Railsback under the Loire Valley-inspired Lieu Dit label. We've featured their excellent melon and sauvignon blanc!) This Santa Barbara chardonnay sees less than 10% new oak, allowing the precision and elegance of the 2015 vintage to shine through. Gorgeous aromas of lemon curd, green apple, lavender and crushed flint meld into flavors of orchard fruit, savory spices, and a core of vibrant acidity in the mouth. A delicious, stony finish with lingering minerality makes this a great match for silky brandade on buttered toast.
Patrick Corbineau "Touraine Cumelle" Vin de France 2011 - NATURAL WINE
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: VIN DE FRANCE / Varietal(s): CABERNET FRANC --- Tucked away in a quarry overlooking the Loire in the village of Candes St. Martin, Patrick Corbineau makes obsessively natural wines meant for his neighbors to enjoy. However, word has gotten out and wine lovers from Paris to New York are seeking out these delicious hidden gems! Patrick's vineyards are scattered amidst the fields of grain that surround the village, and he continues to resist attempts by the grain growers to buy him out. Several years ago he quit his job as a welder on the spot and became a vigneron when his grandfather threatened to rip out the family vineyard if Patrick didn't take it. Now he rarely leaves the six hectares of vineyards he is so attached to (one in Chinon and five in Touraine), working them lovingly with his horse-drawn equipment, and using no herbicides or pesticides. His father initially frowned upon his natural approach and the amount of time he spent in the cellar (thinking that Patrick was drinking!), insisting that the domaine modernize. But Patrick preferred to work like the old timers, and no one now can argue with the wine that results from his meticulous techniques. He destems by hand, with slow maceration, and gentle pressing before the wine is put unfiltered into old black mold-covered casks awaiting just the right moment for bottling. 100% cabernet franc, Cumelles is rustic, spicy, and a tad feral, with rich dark fruit, brambly crushed herbs, and flinty minerality! Great with roasted leg of lamb!
il Colle Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: ITALY / Region: TUSCANY / Appellation: BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG / Varietal(s): SANGIOVESE --- Among the "small jewels in Montalcino's original growing area", Il Colle was once a part of Conti Costanti's Colle al Matrichese, a property that sits at a high altitude of 400-450 meters. The elevation yields delicate wines, and the fruit from these vineyards is blended with grapes from a more southerly vineyard (Castelnuovo dell'Abate at 220 meters), that the family had purchased in 1998. The origins of Il Colle date to 1972, when Alberto Carli planted vines with Giulio Gambelli, a practitioner of traditional winemaking techinques. Employing natural yeasts, no temperature control, long maceration on skins, and no filtering, Alberto aged his Brunellos in Slavonian botti. Alberto and Giulio stayed true to these methods, as did Caterina who took over the rustic estate upon Alberto's death in 2001, and the winery has changed little in the past 40 years. Brunello is the crown jewel of Montalcino wines, and this is an impressive example. 100% sangiovese, this offers up enticing red berry, crushed roses, wild mint, forest floor, and new leather aromas. Effortlessly melding structure and subtlety, the full-bodied palate bursts with layers of morello cherry, succulent raspberry reduction, licorice, and baking spice. A backbone of firm, velvety tannins balance freshness with structure. An elegant texture and lingering finish with hints of savory saline make this an amazing classic to open with osso bucco, rib eye steak with rosemary and garlic, or roast pork loin with creamy polenta and wild mushroom sauce.
