Livon Friulano Collio DOC 2013 - SUSTAINABLY GROWN
Country: ITALY / Region: FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA / Appellation: COLLIO DOC / Varietal(s): FRIULANO --- Framed by the vision of founder Dorino Livon, the Azienda Agricola Livon estate on the Collio hills has slowly grown in size and prestige in the Italy’s Northeastern province of Friuli. Though the wines are classically styled, Livon experiments with a range of environmentally conscious viticulture practices including the incorporation of indigenous plants in the vineyards. Grown on marl and clay, the friulano grapes evolve into a balanced, bright wine in the cellar. With delicate aromas of almond and honeysuckle, this wine will pair well with roasted whole fish with citrus and herbs (the vineyard itself is less than 20 miles from the sea) or take a page out of a local cookbook and drink with a stuffed bird -- pheasant if you can swing it – and a side of polenta finished with Friulian Montasio cheese.
Domaine Lombard Côtes du Rhône AOC Brézème Grand Chêne 2014 - BIODYNAMICALLY GROWN
Country: FRANCE / Region: RHONE VALLEY / Appellation: COTES DU RHONE AOC BREZEME / Varietal(s): SYRAH --- Although the label humbly says “Côtes du Rhone”, history has a more favorable view of Brézème – once touted as being only second to Hermitage, arguably the most notable Northern Rhône wine producing area. As a region, Brézème did not rebound from the late 19th century phylloxera epidemic like its neighbors to the north, and to this day has only 23 total hectares under vine, farmed by six producers. Domain Lombard brings us some lovely biodynamically farmed syrah. Planted on south-facing slopes, this syrah reaches perfect ripeness for classic Rhône valley red. Twenty percent whole cluster fruit fermented with native yeasts adds layers of textural, tannic depth to the wine. Pepper and black cherry take the lead on the nose, making this the perfect wine to open with rosemary and red wine-braised lamb shanks or penne with black olives and roasted fennel.
Pavi Wines Dolcetto Napa Valley 2008 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: NAPA VALLEY / Varietal(s): DOLCETTO --- The dolcetto grape is native to the Piedmont region of northern Italy, where it is a favorite for everyday drinking. Lesser known here in the US, the Pelissa family propagated this old Torino clone at the University of California, Davis in 1981. All 9 total acres of dolcetto planted in Napa are managed by Pavi. Pavi proprietor and winemaker, Rob Lawson, strives to integrate Napa Valley's climate and growing techniques with classic Italian grape varietals. This 100% dolcetto is a tasty, medium-bodied wine from grapes that are whole berry processed, and then barrel aged for 3-4 years in French oak barrels, 10% of which is new oak. Lush in texture, and redolent with bright raspberry and cherry aromas, it offers intense flavors of spiced cherry, balanced acidity and gentle tannins, just lovely for spaghetti Bolognese, stews, or pizza.
