ORGANIC, NATURAL, AND BIODYNAMIC WINES FROM FRANCE AND SPAIN!
Dominique Lucas "Quintessence" Chasselas Vin de Savoie AOP 2014 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: FRANCE / Region: SAVOIE / Appellation: VIN DE SAVOIE / Varietal(s): CHASSELAS --- Dominique Lucas comes from a family of Burgundian winemakers (he is the 5th generation) who own a small estate outside of Pommard. After completing oenology school, he decided not to return to the family estate because he did not want to work within the strict oversight of the AOC, settling instead in the Haut Savoie in 2008. In spite of a family history of Burgundian winemaking traditions, he vinifies his grapes in an array of different amphorae, barrels, and concrete eggs. Fermentations occur naturally and the only addition to the wines is a tiny bit of sulfur at bottling. The results are stunning: pure and character-filled, these wines can hold their own with any of the best of the region. Chasselas is a fairly esoteric grape, grown mostly in eastern France, Switzerland, and Germany, and mostly drunk casually, apres-ski. Here, however, it comes into its own, bright and refreshing! A soft, minerally texture yields to white flowers, ripe apple fruit and lemon zest. Fresh and clean, this is perfect for perking up your palate during summer's doldrums. Open this as a delicious aperitif, or enjoy at your next lobster boil!
Jeremy Quastana Syrah Vin de France 2016 - NATURAL WINE
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: VIN DE FRANCE / Varietal(s): SYRAH --- Jeremy Quastana is a young up-and-coming vigneron who's already turning heads with only four vintages under his belt! He learned the trade working with Olivier Lemasson, and managed to acquire a few hectares of land near Olivier's main plots in the Loir et Cher, close to Cheverny. Prior to his time with Olivier, Jeremy worked at Marcel Lapierre's winery, and also did a six-month internship at Clos Ouvert in Chile. His winemaking has evolved into a clean, drinkable style using very little sulfur. In 2016, Jeremy lost a fair amount of his harvest to hail; to supplement his production, he purchased syrah from Anne Leclerc in the Roussillon. All of the grapes are certified organic and come from sandy soils, resulting in a light-bodied, silky red full of freshness and energy. A slightly funky nose yields to a juicy, brambly palate of sweet red raspberries, with zesty acidity and a touch of smoke on the finish. A perfect addition to your summer red collection, give this a try with lamb sausages with grilled onions and zucchini.
Finca Parera "Fosc"Penedès DO 2015
Country: SPAIN / Region: CATALUNYA / Appellation: PENEDÈS DO / Varietal(s): SUMOLL/ULL DE LLEBRE AKA TEMPRANILLO/SYRAH --- Located on a compact estate in Catalunya's Upper Penedès, Finca Parera is made up of the father-son winemaking team of Jordi and Ruben Parera. Fourth generation farmers (since 1892), they've worked organically since 1999 and biodynamically since 2013. Some of their vines are over 78 years old, and the location 350 meters from the sea lends a decidedly Mediterranean influence to their wines, which are hand harvested and fermented with native yeast, with minimal intervention in the cellar. Fosc is sourced from old vines of Sumoll and Ull de Llebre (Catalan for tempranillo and syrah) from their Plum Vineyard in Sant Llorenç d'Hortons. Cool sea breezes and a winemaker's light touch imbue this with a delicate fresh red fruit character, supported by fine tannins and a touch of earth on the finish. Delightful with a slight chill, pair this with grilled steak tacos with cilantro chimichurri sauce.
