Brick & Mortar produces single vineyard pinot noir and chardonnay from high elevation sites in Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Mendocino Ridge AVA, leaning towards an Old World style that results in bright, structured wines with moderate alcohol and strong terroir character. This young winery is owned by Matt, Alexis and Troy Iaconis, and is named for the cobblestone towns of Burgundy that Matt fell in love with in the summer of 2011. Given that Burgundy's iconic pinot noir grape was to be the cornerstone of Brick & Mortar's wines as well, and inspired by the ability of brick and mortar foundations to hold up some of the oldest buildings in the world through difficult times, the name Brick & Mortar seemed to embody both the inspiration and challenges of winemaking. Today we're featuring two unique "sister" wines – one white, one red, both picked the same day from the same two vineyards, and comprised of the exact same blend percentage between pinot noir and chardonnay. Intrigued? So were we!
We're also opening a new rosé from longtime favorite Broc Cellars, this one made from the lagrein grape, perfect for those days when you just can't decide between a rosé or a chillable red!
Brick & Mortar Vin ClairBrick & Mortar "Vin Clair" Napa Valley 2016
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA/ Appellation: NAPA VALLEY / Varietal(s): PINOT NOIR+CHARDONNAY--- This crisp white is just perfect for summertime drinking, with generous aromas of floral, citrus, and chamomile. Flavors of Golden Delicious apple, quince, and grapefruit (from the chardonnay) are intertwined with luscious strawberry and Rainier cherries (courtesy of the pinot). A lengthy, bright finish makes this a lovely match with scallops, crab, and fresh cheeses.
Broc Cellars Lagrein Rosé Lone Pine Vineyard El Dorado 2016 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: EL DORADO / Varietal(s): LAGREIN --- Founded by Chris Brockway, Broc Cellars is built on a philosophy of sourcing sustainable and organic fruit on the way to creating exceptional wines. Brockway takes a hands-off approach, allowing nature to be in charge. This fantastic new rosé is made from lagrein, and inspired by the wines of the Alto Adige region of Northern Italy, the grape's native home. Lone Pine Vineyard is located at 1700 ft elevation in El Dorado County, just outside of Placerville, and boasts volcanic rock, shale, and fine-grained granite soils. Bridging the gap between rosé and chillable red, this displays a nose of rose petal, red cherry, and crushed wild blackberry stems. On the palate, it is textured and medium-bodied, with flavors of brambly raspberry, cranberry, and Rainier cherry dancing over a core of light tannins and a lingering finish. This wine, like all Broc Cellars wines, is made naturally, meaning only native yeast is used to spark fermentation, and nothing is added except a minimal dose of sulfur prior to bottling. Try this with grilled pizza with proscuitto, arugula, shallot, and ricotta.
Brick & Mortar "Vin Rubis" Napa Valley 2016
Country: USA / Region: CALIFORNIA / Appellation: NAPA VALLEY / Varietal(s): PINOT NOIR+CHARDONNAY --- Harvested on the same day as "Vin Clair", this light and lively red has a unique personality all its own. The pinot noir and chardonnay were co-fermented, resulting in a vivacious palate perfect for steamy days where white or rosé is just not quite what you had in mind. Here the pinot comes to the fore, providing a vibrant core of juicy raspberry, plum, spice, and delicate dry tannins, while the chardonnay contributes texture and hints of ripe apple and mandarin. Fantastic lightly chilled, uncork this with smoked salmon, charcuterie, or BBQ ribs!
