NEW REDS JUST LANDED... HERE.
Strofilia Red Blend Peloponnese IGP 2013
Country: GREECE / Region: PELOPONNESE / Appellation: PELOPONNESE IGP / Varietal(s): AGIORGITIKO+CABERNET SAUVIGNON+SYRAH --- Strofilia was founded by two friends and colleagues, Giannis Maltezos and Achilleas Lampsidis, who planted vines on the Maltezou family estate, located in Tourkochorafo near Anavyssos. They began producing wines in 1981, and today Strofilia has over 60 hectares of vineyards at its disposal; some owned, some rented, and some belonging to associates. With a focus on environmentally responsible winemaking, as well as building long term relationships with local growers, Strofilia highlights both native Greek and traditional European grape varietals. This red blend is a great example; 50% agiorgitiko, 30% cabernet sauvignon, and 20% syrah. Agiorgitiko (which translates to "Saint George", and is sometimes labeled as such) is among the most commonly found indigenous red grapes found in Greece, native to the Peloponnese area. A bit like a cabernet franc or spicy merlot, it displays notes of dark fruits such as plums and black currants, along with velvety tannins. It plays well with other grapes too, such as the cabernet and syrah here. The result is a versatile, medium-bodied wine with deep spicy aromas of charred cedar, ripe blackberries, and plums. Soft and rich on the palate, it offers up more dark fruit, gentle tannins, and a hint of pepper on the lingering finish. Give it a try with baked haddock with bacon, tomatoes, and onions.
Les Têtes "Au Suivant!" Bordeaux Superieur AOC 2016 - ORGANICALLY GROWN
Country: FRANCE / Region: BORDEAUX / Appellation: BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR AOC / Varietal(s): MERLOT --- Founded and run collaboratively by four friends; Nicolas, Philippe, Baptiste, and Vivien, Les Têtes ("The Heads") is about making wine to be drunk with friends, using natural techniques that won't be hard on your head the day after! They are located in the village of Le Pressoir in Touraine Azay-le-Rideau in the Loire Valley. Les Têtes focuses on fresh, drinkable, competitively priced wines that are grown organically and fermented with native yeasts and with minimal sulfur added. For this cuvée, they took advantage of the opportunity to buy a quantity of organic Bordeaux Supérieur grapes, specifically merlot. The wine was made all in concrete tank, with natural yeasts to spark fermentation, and aged for 12 months before release with only a tiny amount of sulfur added at bottling. A fun, delicious arrival to the late winter lineup, Au Suivant is a reference to a classic Jacques Brel song meaning "to the next one,” perhaps meaning glass (or bottle?!). 100% organic merlot, this opens with fabulous aromas of violets, black cherry, and tobacco, evolving into dark, juicy plum, blackcurrant, and cherry flavors on the palate, with elegant firm tannins wrapping it all up beautifully. A serious wine that doesn't take itself too seriously, this is also a serious value, one that would surely shine with poulet rôti (roast chicken with herbs), roast root vegetables, or braised venison with coffee and chocolate.
