L'Effet Papillon Côtes Catalanes IGP Blanc 2017
Country: FRANCE / Region: ROUSSILLON / Appellation: CÔTES CATALANES IGP / Varietal(s): GRENACHE BLANC+MACABEU --- It's back! This perennial favorite comes from the iron-rich clay of Rivesaltes in the Roussillon, in the south of France. Talented winemaker Majorie Gallet has coaxed an elegant white from the challenging conditions of this region, which include wind, heat, low moisture, and poor soil. 90% grenache blanc, 10% macabeu, dry, soft, and stony, with floral aromas of jasmine and orange rind. Fresh melon and apricot on the palate and a crisp, fine finish show off its elegance and versatility. Pair this with any light cuisine and enjoy one of the best values around!
Villa Malacari Rosso Conero DOC 2013
Country: ITALY / Region: MARCHE / Appellation: ROSSO CONERO DOC / Varietal(s): MONTEPULCIANO --- Winemaking in the Conero region of Italy (located in the middle of the Marche, just south of the city of Ancona), dates back to the Etruscans in the 10th century BC. The Malacari family has itself been in the region over 500 years, and also boasts one of the longest continually operating wineries in the area. Alessandro Starrabba is at the helm of the winery today, a descendant of the Malacari family on his mother's side. The montepulciano grape is dominant in Conero, thriving in the mineral-heavy chalky limestone and clay soils. Offagna is in the heart of the Rosso Conero appellation with some of its most prized vineyards, and the Malacari family has had vines there since the 1600s. Among the best value montepulciano to be found in Italy, Villa Malacari is aged in large, neutral oak, and displays a beautiful, classic character. Dried red berry fruits, cedar, and spice abound with a texture reminiscent of a well-worn leather chair - sumptuous and inviting. A heavenly pairing with Greek pastitsio or classic lasagna (yes, with bechamel!).
