Founded in 2010 by husband and wife Luca Faccenda and Carolina Roggero, Valfaccenda's production is dedicated exclusively to nebbiolo and arneis, superstar grapes of the Roero region of Piedmont, Italy, where the winery is located and where Luca's family has lived since the 1700s. Working organically among the steep, high-altitude slopes on the north side of the Tanaro River, their goal is to make wines "characterized by Piedmont and Roero taste," that directly translate "the scents of the vines and the taste of the grape, the health of the plant and the gurgling of the barrel" to the glasses of wine lovers. While some of their bottlings are age-worthy and complex affairs, a few, like this one, are ultra fresh Vin da Beve ("wines to drink," Italy's version of Vin de Soif). Sourced from Luca and Carolina's youngest vines on mostly east-facing slopes, its grapes were picked early and carbonically macerated for five-ish days before three pumpovers in stainless steel. Everything gets basket pressed into neutral barrels to finish fermentation and the wine gets bottles just a few months after harvest. The result is vibrant, light and almost too drinkable, with gentle tannins, high acid and tons of crunchy red raspberries balanced by an earthy undercurrent.
