Clos Roussely dates back to the 18th century, originally as an outbuilding of the castle in the village of Angé-sur-Cher, before being converted into a winery in 1917 by Anatole Roussely. 4th generation winemaker Vincent Roussely (Anatole’s great grandson) took over the family domaine in 2001, and has scrupulously worked to convert the vineyard and winery to organic practices, achieving organic certification in 2007. The estate now encompasses 8 ha of certified organic vineyards which straddle the appellations of Touraine and Touraine Chenonceaux, with the oldest vineyards over 80 years in age. The clay and limestone soils are worked manually and with horse-drawn plows, no chemicals are used, and the protection of biodiversity remains always at the forefront. ‘Canaille’ is 100% gamay from hand harvested grapes, fermented in whole bunches in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Bottling is done with minimal sulfur, and without fining or filtration. This lighter-bodied cuvée is spicy and refreshingly expressive, with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, and crushed herbs. Tart red cranberry and pomegranate flavors dart across the palate, accompanied by vibrant acidity and a flourish of pink peppercorn and cinnamon on the finish. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
