The Angileri and Portelli-Puleo families farm century-old vineyards at the western end of Sicily, outside of Marsala. Vincenzo Angileri has headed the operation since 2013, focusing on organic farming and natural winemaking methods. His ‘Rina’ comes from a tiny, half-hectare vineyard of 30-year-old catarratto vines grown on clay and sand. Harvested by hand, the grapes macerate for a full 90 days. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in chestnut casks, where the wine continues to age for six months before an additional six months’ aging in neutral barrels. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no sulfur dioxide added. Bold and full-bodied, with a deep chestnut color, it exudes dried apricot and hazelnut on the nose. Beautiful texture on the palate rests on a firm tannin foundation. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
