Max von Kunow assumed the reins of von Hövel in 2010, taking over for his father Eberhard, and has nearly doubled the vineyard holdings while at the same time converting the entire estate to organic. Max is meticulous in the winery, allowing certain grapes to see some skin contact while others are not, being very specific of what goes into which of his cuvées. The grapes for this riesling come from the Hütte vineyard, which has red slate, quartzite, and detrius soils. It is a spätlese, meaning the fruit is picked when it is extremely, perhaps even slightly, over-ripe. The aging took place in 80% stainless steel and 20% neutral barrique for the 2017 vintage. It is a wonderfully classic expression of Saar Mosel riesling that brings to mind pink grapefruit, stone fruit and sweet herbs, along with the darker, more savory notes. A medium-dry expression that has the perfect amount of sweetness to tame and complement generously spiced dishes. Or simply serve as an easy spring or summer afternoon quaff! Organically grown.
