|Appellation/Sub-Region||Champagne AOC - Côte des Bar|
|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Certified Organic|
Bertrand Gautherot is one of a small group of energetic winemakers who in recent years have been drawing attention southwards to the Côte des Bar. Whereas Champagne’s grand cru villages lie on the chalky soils of the département of the Marne, Gautherot’s vineyards grow in the marl and limestone soils of the Aube. Along with Aurélien Gerbais—another Artisan Wine Shop favorite Aubois winemaker—and other compatriots in the region, Bertrand is pursuing excellence through a dedication to organic farming and a Burgundian focus on terroir. The Côte des Bar is, after all, closer to Chablis than to Reims. Bertrand’s vineyards are harvested by hand, and he ferments with indigenous yeasts. The pinot noir for this ‘Fidèle’ blanc de noirs brut nature comes from soils of Kimmeridgian marl, including from the Vouette vineyard from which the domaine draws its name. Aged on the lees for 20 months, it is bottled with minimal sulfur and disgorged with zero dosage. It balances beautifully the richness of red berries and hazelnut with delicate minerality and citrus, ending with subtle herbal notes and a hint of ginger. Certified organic.
