Weingut Familie Bauer is run by winemaker husband and wife duo, Josef and Eva Maria Bauer, in the Grossriedenthal area of Wagram. Their 17 hectares of vines are certified organic, because they believe that cultivating the natural diversity of the landscape and being conscientious of it best expresses the terroir in their wines. They have a wide range of wines, including crisp classics made from grüner veltliner and roter veltliner, along with incredible dessert wines. Roter veltliner - no relation to grüner veltliner - is an ancient variety associated with the Wagram region of Austria. This roter veltliner was harvested by hand from 0.5 ha of Hinterberg vineyards dating back to 1973. After sorting and de-stemming it is crushed and spontaneously fermented in 600L oak barrels for 11 months, then pressed right before the next harvest. The wine spends the duration of that time on the lees, with a total of 15 months of aging, all in the same barrels, before being bottled unfiltered. Spicy tangerine aromas complement a slight tingle on the palate, with a slight tannic grip and citrus brightness on the finish. Hints of umami and white pepper complement savory herbal notes, making this fantastic with food. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
