Yes, Jochen Beurer raced BMX bikes in the 90s: he even captured the European championship. But for over 20 years now, he’s been nailing it with elegant, precise, natural wines. His vineyards have been certified biodynamic since 2012, and he’s been using natural yeasts nearly since he began making wine. His approach to the vine, the location, and the other species present can only be described as holistic. He takes the environment that produces his wines very seriously, and the wine world has, in turn, come to consider him one of the most important winemakers in Germany. Although the Württemberg area primarily produces red wines, the soils, slopes, and relatively high elevations of Beurer’s vineyards favor riesling. In this example, chardonnay and gewürztraminer combine with the dominant riesling to lift this white blend “up in the air,” as it were. Refreshing and complex, this wine tastes of citrus and stone fruit with herbal notes. Certified biodynamic, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
