The Harvey family boasts a grape growing heritage that dates back six generations, when John Harvey arrived in South Australia in 1839. Today John’s descendents, brothers Tom and Jock, run the family winery, which encompasses six vineyards in the McLaren Vale. Bottled under the Chalk Hill label in Australia, and Wits End in the US, all of the estate’s wines are made by Renae Hirsch, who approaches winemaking with the goal of using as little intervention as possible. She focuses on purity of fruit, highlighting the individual character of each vineyard or region, while maintaining balance and nuance. ‘Luna’ is 97% shiraz sourced from the certified organic Wits’ End Vineyard (planted in the 1970s and named for the heavy black clay soils which make the vineyard practically inaccessible in winter), along with 3% barbera. Grapes are destemmed, and primary fermentation occurs in barrel with full malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine is aged for 14 months in oak, with an additional two months in tank, before being bottled without fining or filtration. ‘Luna’ features generous aromas of dark berry fruit, vanilla blossom, and baking spices. It is full bodied and voluptuous on the palate, with ripe red berry, plum, and hints of candied bacon and sweet BBQ. The finish melds fine tannin with a final flourish of spice. Sustainably grown, vegan.
