East and upriver from Bordeaux lies the sleepily historic town of Bergerac. Straddling the Dordogne, the Bergerac region is sprinkled with castles, forests, and vineyards. With soils containing more limestone than Bordeaux’s and an inland climate with more temperature variation summer to winter, Bergerac represents a distinct terroir from its coastal neighbor region. The de Conti family traces its roots in the area to 1925, when Vincenzo and Clorinda de Conti arrived from Italy. Their youngest son, Albert, settled with his wife Odette in the village of Saint-Julien d’Eymet, just to the south of Bergerac. Guillaume and Paul de Conti, grandsons of Albert’s, now make wine from the same plot that Albert planted in the 1960s. Their ‘Vigne d’Albert’ red blend takes advantage of the diversity of vines that Albert grew. With a gentle extraction and eight months’ aging in stainless steel, this cuvée retains a delightful juicy freshness. It is bottled without filtration and with no added sulfites. Red fruit and fresh acidity are framed by soft tannins and a touch of spice. A charming and approachable wine! Certified biodynamic, organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
