Serious albariño from serious winemakers: Pedralonga means “big rock” in Gallego, and if that conjures up images of intense minerality, that’s exactly the intent! Francisco Alfonso planted 7 ½ ha on a pure granitic hillside located 10 miles from the Atlantic back in 1982, and in 1997 the winery became what it is today. Francisco’s son Miguel currently runs the estate and has been incorporating biodynamic practices into the already organically farmed vineyards, often quoting the Galician saying, “A man who does not watch the moon does not reap the harvest.” Miguel takes an equally nature-focused, hands-off approach in the cellar, eschewing destemming his albariño, sparking fermentations with native yeast, and aging his wines on the lees for an extended period of time, resulting in a distinctive signature style of wine. This albariño is a dramatic showstopper, with intense minerality and extraordinary depth and complexity wrapped up with precision and electrifying acidity. Sancerre-lovers will want to sit up and take notice! Organically grown, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
