MORE ON THIS WINE
Becoming a winemaker appears to be a predestined pathway that was written in the stars for 5th-generation Oakland native and 5th-generation winemaker Chenoa Ashton-Lewis. In 2019, Chenoa and cinematographer Will Asanta traveled from Los Angeles up to Sonoma Mountain when they got word that Chenoa’s family vineyard still had unsold grapes that were quite literally being left for the birds. With the help of some friends and family, the pair crafted a single barrel of co-fermented syrah and pinot noir that was stored for 8 months in a tent on the family’s organic 50-year-old vineyard that was established by Chenoa’s grandparents in the 1970s. Furthering the aura of cosmic destiny, in 2020, Chenoa and Will discovered new vines growing in the pinot noir vineyard that had been destroyed in the 2017 Nuns Fire, vines that were abandoned and buried underground, growing horizontally amongst tall grass. With their guidance, by the early summer, they had rehabilitated the vines such that 160 vines that were once seemingly lifeless were bearing fruit. How magical, no? And thus, in 2020, Ashanta Wines was fully established. The fruit for the ‘Amanecer’ rosé of tempranillo is sourced from Mendocino’s Round Valley and is from the only known vineyard that produces fruit in the AVA that is located about three and a half hours north of Sonoma. With an elevation of 1,400 feet, Round Valley is the only Mendocino Valley AVA with a continental rather than maritime climate. The tempranillo was handpicked and direct-pressed wholecluster into stainless steel for 2 weeks and then aged in neutral French oak for 7 months. This wine is unfined, unfiltered, and has zero sulphur additions.
