The north fork of Long Island has proven in recent years to be an excellent region for producing distinctive merlot. The coastal location, with its extended growing season, can add an extra ripeness to an understated earthiness. Matthew Spaccarelli, winemaker at Hudson Valley’s Benmarl Winery, draws from carefully chosen New York State producers for this wine. The result here is a uniquely New York expression of a well-known grape.
