Old wine in spiffy new cans? An old vineyard anyway: the oldest in the country. The name of Benmarl’s signature Bordeaux blend, “Slate Hill Red,” refers to the original name of their vineyard (farmed since the early 1800s) just across the river in Marlboro, NY. This is a crowd-pleasing, medium-bodied mix of cabernet franc, merlot, and malbec grapes, all sourced from New York State vineyards. It melds flavors of red plum, blackberry, and cassis together with a touch of oak. A fleshy, savory texture on the palate finishes with a hint of spice.
