Domaine Bois de Boursan was founded in 1955 by Jean Versino, and now encompasses 10 hectares within the borders of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Now in the hands of Jean’s son, Jean-Paul, the family manages 27 separate parcels of vines that include all 13 permitted cepages for the appellation, with an average vine age of over 50 years old. The vineyards are worked organically without the use of chemicals, and winemaking techniques are steadfastly traditional. ‘Le Petit Oursan’ features fruit from a parcel outside the town of Joncquières that Jean-Paul acquired in 2015. Located about 10 km northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this cooler terroir vineyard consists of 1.8 ha of grenache, 0.6 ha of syrah, and 1.3 ha of merlot, with vines averaging between 25-35 years of age. This cuvée is made of 75% fruit from Joncquières vinified in steel tank, alongside 25% declassified Châteauneuf-du-Pape vinified and aged in cement. 45% grenache, 40% merlot, and 15% syrah, the Bois de Boursan pedigree shines through without question, showcasing the estate’s signature balance between sophisticated high toned red fruit and earthy, rustic character. A great bistro-style red for a variety of food pairings, and a great value as well! Organically grown.
