“In fair Verona, we lay our scene…” An area often associated with famously star-crossed lovers, steeped in tragedy and romance, Verona is the setting of another epic story unfolding in real time. That is the tale of Cantina La Bacheta, where winemaker Giorgia Quintarelli and her partner Simone (and dog Gnocchi) are crafting singular wines of focus and inquiry. At just 25 years of age, she has amassed experience working in Chateauneuf du Pape and now has four hectares spread over three separate plots on her family’s property near the Via Gorgo. Certified organic since 2012, and currently in conversion to biodynamics, the only treatments the vines experience are copper and sulfur sprayings for mildew. Bottled according to the arrival of the new moon, ‘Luna’ is composed entirely of garganega that sees 4 months of skin contact. Notes of marigold and chamomile enhance the ephemeral character of this ‘lunatique’ ferment, of which only 650 bottles were produced. Herbaceous and almost vermouth-like, the garganega slithers across the palate with a subtle grip, offering a lingering finish of peachpit and salted honeydew rind. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
