Patrimonio is the most important AOC on the island of Corsica, covering 400 hectares with half of that being owned by the two largest producers. The other half is split amongst 30 smaller growers, Clos Marfisi being one of them. Brother and sister, Mathieu and Julie are fifth generation at the helm of this estate, having taken over from their father, Touissant, when Julie returned in 2001, and her brother in 2012, from having careers elsewhere in France. Toussaint is still active in the vineyard, and is the reason the entirety of the estate is planted to local varieties and farmed organically; it has never been touched by pesticides or herbicides. Their vineyards are unique in Corsica in that they are full of large, white limestone chunks. All of their wines are vinified with ambient yeast and the most minimal amount of sulfur is occasionally used. This ‘Ravagnola’ is 100% niellucciu from west-facing vineyards that overlook the ocean. After destemming, it ferments and ages in tank for two years. The characteristic minerality of the location lends a distinct structure to this serious but approachable Corsican red. Certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine.
