The story of Tenuta Colpaola is that of a family affair. Francesco Porcarelli’s grandfather had always managed a rental property in Marche, a charming and quaint escape from the hustle and bustle of the world. However, at that time, few were thinking of vineyards, despite the recent granting of viticultural status to Matelica and Jesi. The love of the land grew from generation to generation, with Francesco’s father Piero introducing a few plots of vines to the estate when he took over the property from his father. Once ownership was passed on to Francesco and his wife, Stefania, they began selling their grapes to the local co-op. In 2007, the couple made the brave leap to pivot their production and to replant their vineyard to local verdicchio clones and opt into organic practices.Today, the estate covers 10 hectares at the very tippy top of the Matelica appellation - the vineyards climb up to 650 meters, that’s 200 meters above almost all of their neighbors! Fruit is handpicked and the wine is made with minimal intervention. Grapes are gently pressed and the juice goes through a cool fermentation in tank to amplify its freshness and bright, lip-smacking acidity. Matured for four months in stainless steel before spending two months in bottle prior to release. Tart, and gushing with acidity, there is a nervy, saline edge to give a bit of bite. A patio pounder, through and through, it would also pair beautifully with crudo and crudite. Certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine.
