Winemaker Matthieu Cosse and oenologist Catherine Maisonneuve joined forces in 1999 to form Domaine Cosse et Maisonneuve, based around Prayssac, just outside Cahors. Beginning with a 5 hectare estate planted with old vines of malbec, they now have 17 ha in total, mostly of malbec, with smaller amounts of merlot and tannat. Their vineyards are located in prime locations on gravel and clay above the Lot River, and are biodynamically farmed, with plans for future certification by Demeter. (They are currently certified organic by Ecocert.) Their malbecs eschew the rustic, old-school style of wines most often associated with the area in favor of an elegant, lifted character that smoothly and transparently expresses both the unique terroir and meticulous efforts in the vineyard and cellar. ‘Solis’ is produced from a 10-hectare plot in the commune of Mauroux, and is de-stemmed and vinified in vat to preserve its juicy, accessible nature. Fresh and velvety, it displays beautiful notes of blueberry, violet, red plum, and crushed herbs on a medium-bodied frame that finishes with well-integrated tannins and a hint of spice. Fantastic with BBQ, or equally cozy with cold night stews or cassoulet. This wine is a fantastic value with aging potential - if you can resist drinking it all now! Biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
