Founded by winemaker and owner Brianne Day in 2012, Day Wines is a producer of boutique, artisanal bottlings from numerous AVAs in Oregon, sourcing only from high-quality organic and biodynamic vineyards. Her family moved to the Willamette Valley when she was 16, and in her 20s, she traveled the world’s wine regions for two years, falling more in love with wine at each stop, taking intern positions in France, New Zealand, and Argentina. In 2012, a friend asked her if she was interested in buying fruit from his family’s vineyard, and she decided it was the right time to get started on her winemaking dreams, and Day Wines was born. The “Vin de Days l’Orange” is made up of riesling (33%), muller thurgau (26%), gewurztraminer (24%), and pinot gris (17%) from three organically farmed vineyards in the Willamette Valley. The grapes are all destemmed, then co-fermented on their skins for about three weeks until dry. Maturation occurs in neutral French oak, before bottling without fining or filtration. These aromatic varietals really shine with extended skin contact, bursting with fragrant layers of Cara Cara orange, honeysuckle, and crushed herbs. On the palate, juicy notes of tangerine, pineapple, and spice are supported by crisp acidity and gentle, lingering tannic grip. A good intro for those curious about orange wines, but a fantastic example for enthusiasts as well. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
