MORE ON THIS WINE
If we made t-shirts emblazoned with “Farmers first! Polyculture = life!” they may also be adorned with the faces of Pierre-Andre and Anne Deplaude. “We were farmers before we were vignerons,” they say. When they first started to farm out in Coteaux-Du-Gier between Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand, wine production was one of the last things on their mind. Instead, their focus was on grains, fruits, and dairy cows. Wine production existed, sure, but it was a teeny tiny part of the program. Then, in the early 2000s, a drop in milk prices forced them to go back to the drawing board and they decided to convert some of their most interesting land to vineyard sites. The wines are humble but powerful, unknown and beguiling. The rarity of these bottlings should not intimidate, rather it’s an invitation to explore and expand. This wine is made entirely of organically farmed chouchillon, a local variety thought to be native to Loire Valley, long forgotten and overlooked. Vinified and aged in tank, the wine bursts with aromatics and lush, cashmere-like texture. Opulent without being haughty, it’s a perfect shawl for these autumnal days. Organically grown, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
