Helen Durand is the fourth generation of the Charavin family to cultivate vines in the heart of the Rasteau appellation of Rhône. With its origin story rooted in love and marriage, the estate is the result of the merging of vines held by Durand’s great-grandfathers when their children tied the knot. Taking the reins in 1996, Helen shifted the cultivation of their 35 hectares of vines towards organic and biodynamic practices, refraining from the use of herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or synthetic products. For a region known for rich and dense red wines, Helen’s propensity for gentle extractions and lower interventions has offered a soft reframe of what grapes from these ancient clay-limestone are capable of producing. This blend of 70% grenache, 20% syrah, and 10% carignan hailing from 40-year-old vines is fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and aged in cement on its fine lees for 18 months. Fresh and finessed, taut and elegant, it presents like the perfectly slick-backed bun paired with a red lip, effortlessly chic and smooth. Bright bing cherry and an expressed orange peel offer themselves like the first whiff of a perfectly crafted Old Fashioned. Certified organic, certified biodynamic, sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
