The Cornu domaine was established in 1875, five years after the Cornu family settled in the town of Ladoix. Edmond Cornu took over the domaine in 1956, and began bottling his own wines in 1959 (up until then all the estate’s wines had been sold to negociants). He then began expanding the domaine accordingly, and the family’s holdings now encompass 15 hectares spread across the communes of Ladoix, Chorey, Aloxe Corton, and Savigny in the Cote de Beaune, as well as a small parcel in Corgoloin in the Cote de Nuits. 13.5 of those hectares are planted to pinot noir, with the rest comprised of chardonnay and aligoté. Edmond’s son, Pierre, has now taken on leadership of the domaine, advised by his father, and assisted by his cousin, Emmanuel Boireau, in the vineyards and cellar. ‘Les Barrigards’ Bourgogne Rouge comes from a single parcel of pinot noir, planted in the 1980s on gravelly clay and limestone soils across the Route Nationale and downslope of Choroy-lès-Beaune. All fruit is hand harvested and destemmed, and the wine sees no new oak during its 12 month élevage. Elegant, pure bright red fruit, violet, incense, and forest floor notes all intermingle gracefully across the palate, adding up to a compelling, classic expression of the Côte de Beaune.
