Anglo-Australian couple Emma and Andrew Nielson settled in the walled city of Beaune after apprenticing in California and New Zealand for five years. Having landed in the epicenter of chardonnay and pinot noir, they run Le Grappin out of Fanny Sabre’s old cellar, just across the street from the mayor’s office. Emma and Andrew take pains to do everything by hand in the vineyards and cellar, and maintain long term relationships with growers to guarantee consistency and sustainability. ‘Les Treuffères’ is a parcel of 40 year old chardonnay located above the village of Buxy in the center of the Montagny Premier Cru appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, and has never seen any synthetic herbicides or pesticides. Grapes were harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeast in large 400L barrels. After full lees aging for 18 months without stirring or racking, the wine was very lightly filtered and bottled with sustainable corks. Intense, complex, and lively in character; generous layers of flowers, juicy orchard fruit, and citrus mingle with nutty undertones and a defined mineral backbone. Luxuriously textured on the palate, the finish is long and expansive. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
