Where Food Meets Its Match: Drink with fatty and oily dishes to temper the wine’s acidity; acidic dishes will enhance its fruitfulness and make the wine appear less dry and bitter.

A hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Taurasi, the Guastaferro estate embodies the essence of Campania - powerful, graceful, and elegantly brooding. If you want to understand this underdog region, uncorking a bottle of this would be a great introduction. The 7.5 hectare estate of aglianico vines (2.5 hectares consist of pre-phylloxera vines between 175 and 200 years, how cool!) are tended by Raffaele Guastaferro after inheriting the responsibility from his father. With a history of selling fruit to big Taurasi wineries, such as Feudi di San Gregorio, the family decided to bottle under their own name in the early 2000s. The 2019 vintage is a masterclass in balance and concentration, offering structure and elegance that makes this bottle a fantastic contender for cellaring and further aging. Expect dark and earthy notes, like a black plum stored in a cigarbox. Tannin slowly unfurls on the palate, persistent but finegrained. It’s giving Helena Bonhom Carter and Morticia Gomez, a gothic romance in the making.
