“Nagy Bajuszú Jász Laci Pincéje” (The Big Mustached Jász Laci’s Winery) was founded by Jász Laci in 2013 on the extinct volcanic butte of Somló in western Hungary. Boasting a prodigious mustache that graces the label of this bottling, he is passionate about making wines slowly and intentionally. His first two wines - an orange wine and a siller - foreshadowed his singular style that relies heavily on a belief in Kartulian methodology and low-sulfur additions. This wine is made of Borsmenta, a fungus-resistant grape variety recently developed in Hungary, which Jász was able to grow without any plant protection or spraying of any kind. Spontaneous fermentation occurs in open vats, macerating on the skins for 2 months before spending 9 months on the gross lees before bottling. Smoke smolders around ripe figs and quince drizzled with clover honey. Unfined and unfiltered, the texture is rich and intense, a masterful introduction to the volcanic soils of Somló. Certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
