One of the rising stars of California winemaking, Joey Tensley gained his reputation by focusing on single vineyard syrahs and Rhône blends from Santa Barbara County. Fundamental Wines is Tensley’s second label, a project that Joey and his wife, Jennifer, were inspired to create during their 15 years of travels to wine regions around the world. This Central Coast cabernet sauvignon was sourced from Paso Robles and Santa Barbara County and plays to the strengths of both appellations, with Santa Barbara lending freshness, vibrant fruit, and floral hints, while the Paso Robles fruit brings texture, concentration, and luscious depth of flavor. Aged 10 months in neutral French oak, this is a big, rich mouthful of wine that bursts with classic cab notes: loads of dark blackberry fruit, touches of green pepper, mint, and roasted coffee on a long, satisfying finish. A great balance of complexity and approachability, this provides all the deep fruit and spice notes cab lovers crave without verging into jammy, overoaked territory.
