The name Keller has become almost synonymous with the Rheinhessen region, and with top-quality riesling. Klaus-Peter Keller and his wife Julia have taken winegrowing sites that were not highly regarded a generation ago—Kirchspiel, Morstein, Hubacker, Abtserde—and turned them into mythical plots of riesling fanaticism. Since taking over the estate from Keller’s father in 2001, they have dedicated the vineyards to organic farming methods and the winery to low-intervention winemaking. The focus has shifted toward drier styles of riesling, with truly spectacular results from their single-vineyard, grosses gewächs cuvées. Even though riesling is the rockstar grape of the Rheinhessen, here grüner silvaner gets a chance in the spotlight! This overlooked varietal is grown in the Erste Lage and Grosse Lage vineyards, with vines a touch younger than 50 years old. Grapes are hand harvested and left to macerate on their skins for 40 hours before pressing, then basket pressed and the juice fermented on ambient yeasts in fuder. This grüner silvaner bears all of Keller’s signature elegance, with delicate layers of white flowers, green apple skin, fresh pear, and white peach, all accented with zesty citrus acidity, a kick of white pepper, and defined crushed stone minerality. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
