Winemaking in the Goriška Brda has sometimes been described in heroic terms, and the dangerously steep terraced marl slopes below the small village of Krasno bear this out. The region of Goriška Brda is located on the western edge of Slovenia, cradled between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, and reaching from the Soča River to the Italian wine region of Friuli. Known for the distinct mineral character of its wines, at the end of WWII the Brda region was split by the border between Yugoslavia and Italy until the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1992. The Goriška Brda Wine Cellar was established as a cooperative in 1957, and is still owned by local wine growers, who work manually using traditional practices. This skin-contact cuvée is a blend of 40% ribolla gialla, 30% malvasia, and 30% sauvignonasse (sauvignon vert), exclusively from the cooperative’s organic growers. The ribolla sees 10 months of skin contact in large oak foudres, while the malvasia and sauvignon each see one month of skin contact and 8 months on lees in stainless steel. The ribolla is aged in large oak for 14 months, and the malvasia and sauvignon in stainless for 15 months before blending. Deep goldenrod in color, it displays generous aromas of quince, under-ripe Bartlett pear, and a hint of nuttiness. A fresh palate of honeyed tangerine, apricot pit, and distinctive mineral structure are buoyed by a bright streak of acidity. Refreshing and versatile alongside a variety of cuisines. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
