Kumusha Wines is the project of world renowned sommelier Tinashe Nyamudoka, a native of Zimbabwe with a resume studded with accolades from the best of African hospitality. In the Zimbabwean Shona language ‘kumusha’ translates to ‘your home,’ ‘your roots,’ or ‘your origin’ and these wines are purely crafted with an eye towards person and place. Tinashe is building a legacy built upon authenticity and honoring their roots. Minimal intervention winemaking combined with natural fermentations allow for the wines to be unadulterated in their expression of terroir and their pureness is a clear result of a native’s perspective. After relocating to Johannesburg, Tinashe who is an accomplished master blender, reached out to Attie Louw, a friend and winemaker at Opstal to help with starting Kumusha in 2017. Beginning with 1200 cases of a Chenin-Semillon blend, the wine sold out in under 2 months, with Tinashe crediting the talented young producers in Swaartland who have moved in the direction of creating wines of a more natural inclination, with lower alcohol and lower intervention, as his inspiration. We’re excited to see what’s to come from this winemaking star. This rosé is made mostly from cinsault (with the addition of a bit of colombard), which saw a couple hours of skin contact at pressing before extended cold settling and cold fermentation. After fermentation, the wine rested on the lees for 2.5 months prior to bottling. The result is totally refreshing: crisp watermelon and white cranberry flavors with a kiss of breezy sea salt.
