MORE ON THIS WINE

In 1964, Marie-Scholastique Horeau purchased and established the Domaine de la Bergerie estate in the heart of Côteaux du Layon, in the Anjou region at the center of Loire Valley. Kept within the family since its inception, the fourth-generation, Anne and her sister Marie, are poised to take the helm. The ethos of the 89-acre estate has always been one rooted in sustainability and strict standards of quality control, including green harvesting, strict sorting, and separate vinification of each individual parcel. Anne has particularly championed the conversion of the estate to organic viticulture, eventually achieving certification. This crémant is a delightfully dry ode to the spice and savory characters of cabernet franc and grolleau, with a lush mousse offering tart cherry and a whisper of white pepper. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, after which they undergo a long pressing period followed by a slow native yeast fermentation and aging in vats. Elegant but with a subtle edge, think the steely-eyed confidence of Bette Davis and the quiet mystique of film noir.
