Le Marie is a small family farm and winery in Barge, in the Pinerolese area of NW Piemonte near the French border. Valerio and his wife Luigina Raviolo work alongside their children, Daniele and Simona, to farm their 10 hectares of vineyards, some of which were planted in the 1930s and survived WWII. Barge is nestled at the foot of Monte Viso and Monte Bracco, and the red schist soils, abundant in minerals, combined with the low soil PH and distinctive climate, produce wines of unique character unlike anything else from Piemonte (so unique that the area’s wines were written about by Leonardo Da Vinci!) Hand harvested nebbiolo grapes are destemmed and macerated for a week before crushing and temperature controlled fermentation in steel tanks. The wine is then aged for three months in large 2500 L oak botti. Elegant yet accessible, this nebbiolo eschews austere red fruit for more succulent black cherry and blueberry notes, alongside violets, roses, and hints of dusty cocoa nibs and savory minerals. Sustainably grown.
