Bold, brilliant, and sometimes baffling (at least to those with preconceived notions), Emeric Foléat of the tiny Les Matheny domaine is among the most talented winemakers in the Jura. He worked for 8 years under the legendary Jacques Puffeney, who instilled in him a profound belief in trusting the quality of the fruit and embracing, rather than avoiding, the risk and uncertainty that comes with true hands off winemaking. Emeric’s 3 hectares in Arbois are farmed without any synthetic chemicals, and his wines come to life in an unassuming cinder block shed without the trappings of modern technology. Every harvest is taken on its own merits, and Emeric makes each decision informed solely by his own instincts and judgment, sometimes vinifying and aging parcels separately if he feels it appropriate, and only using minute additions of sulfur (and sometimes none at all) when absolutely necessary. Each wine is a unique individual, an intensely personal reflection, with its own character and personality. Les Matheny’s trousseau is no exception: far from the delicate, demure character the thin-skinned trousseau grape often takes, this cuvée is unapologetically daring. Bold, bright red cranberry and pomegranate notes mingle with dank potpourri and palo santo on the nose, while the palate vibrates with a feral energy that bursts with brambly wild raspberry and red currant, a cascade of cracked black pepper and an electric wire of tension between acidity and tannin that finishes with elegance and finesse. If this was a book, it would surely be a poetic beauty with page-turning action scenes! Organically grown, sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
