Who says you can’t capture lightning in a bottle? This electric riesling comes from Alsace, France producer Christophe Lindenlaub, who, in addition to apparently mastering the elements, has earned a reputation for his exuberant personality and equally exultant expressions of the region’s top varieties. Since taking the reins of his family’s eight-ish hectare estate in Dorlisheim in 1999, he’s moved progressively away from chemical interventions in the vineyard and cellar—converting the property to organic viticulture (earning organic certification in 2012) and forgoing the use of sulfur—and focused increasingly on creating naturally fermented wines of authenticity, freshness and precision. Hand-harvested from 25-year-old vines grown in a mix of limestone, clay and sandstone soils, the grapes for this bottling were cold soaked and direct pressed into stainless steel tanks; the wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged sur lie for eight months before bottling. Aromatic and immediately appealing, it offers a cool and clean line of acidity highlighted by flavors of green apple, Anjou and seckel pears, lemon peel and green tea, and softened by a hint of petrol. Certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine.
